Monsters With a Side of Romance

The Undead Bookshop is getting ready for our next pop-up. This Saturday, August 16, 2025, we’ll be manifesting at the Queer Mercado in the East L.A. Civic Center. Head over to our event page to see more info on that.

The world feels scarier and scarier every day. I know that I crave a little coziness in these strange times we find ourselves in. But when you’re a spooky bitch, cozy isn’t always easy to come by. That’s why I LOVED the two books I want to yap about today.

Someone You Can Build A Nest In by John Wiswell was such a fun surprise for me. I picked it up not really knowing anything about it, and now I can’t shut up about it. Shesheshen is a puddle of goo who fashions herself a body from extra bones and metal bits to run away from monster hunters. She gets injured and finds herself in the care of Homily. She falls in love and would love nothing more but to lay her eggs inside of Homily. As they spend more time together, Shesheshen learns more about humans and love and that maybe laying her eggs inside a person is not necessarily the romantic move she thinks it is. This book is SO funny, but also…gory??? Dare I say…SWEET?????? It seems like gory and cozy wouldn’t go together in the same book, but you’ll just have to trust me. It’s a true darling of a book.

Of Monsters and Mainframes by Barbara Truelove was something I picked up because I wanted a little science fiction to read, but I’m not truly a hard science fiction fan. I still like a lot of whimsy with my scifi. This was another fun read. It does not take itself seriously at all, but at the same time manages to give us a romance we can really root for. The monsters in this book – all your Universal faves. All of them. Werewolves, Dracula, Frankenstein (‘s monster)….they’re all here. In space. And the spaceship they’re on is called Demeter. Demeter is sentient AI who just wants to do their job and the girls (monsters) are fighting. So funny. So campy. So cute?

Both of these are solid OoooOoOooOOOhs from us.

We’ll have copies of both of these books at the Queer Mercado. Come through and haunt our tent if you’re in the area.

Next week, I have a huge announcement coming! Til then, stay spooky, Ghoulies!
